Role overview

The Design Assistant (Knitwear) role is to provide general support to the Designer (Knitwear).  

Reporting lines

The Design Assistant (Knitwear) reports to the Designer (Knitwear) 

Roles and responsibilities

Key roles and responsibilities will include:

Design 

Research and have a keen awareness of current fashion trends
Translate initial design concepts into drawings, mood boards and obtain fabric developments swatches and samples of any components such as buttons, ribbons… 
Create Fair Isle and other stitch patterns using Illustrator & other packages
Create flat drawings for supplier range sheets

Sourcing 

Source all buttons used on knitwear garments and discuss with Designer regarding suitability and cost
Keep up-to-date archive of the following: colours, fabric developments, weave CADs & yarn qualities
Visit trend shows to source new supplier & yarn quality

Sampling

Gain approval from Designer, Creative Director for any fabric developments 
Liaise with suppliers alongside Designer to create specifications of all designs & attend supplier meetings
Liaise with suppliers regarding samples required & with Merchandising team regarding samples orders budget.
Provide regular sample status updates for Head Buyer ensuring all changes are notified.
Receive all samples, organize booking with Head Buyer, check specs & revert to suppliers with comments
Ensure all samples prepared and delivered in good time for location shoots, press day and collection launches
Obtain approval and sign off from Creative Director on all components and details of sample garment on hand over to Head Buyer for Manufacturing
Assist with QC of production & final signed off on shipping samples & size sets
 
Location shoots, Press Day and Collection Launches
Prepare all samples for and attend location shoots for brochure when required
Undertake research into other brands and keep abreast with competitors
Regularly spend time in stores to research and learn the habits and wants of the Brora customer
Respond to shop feedback reports and use the information to help with new collections
Ad hoc duties as required

 

Key attributes

  • As with all posts in Brora, this is a demanding role. It is essential the post holder has an excellent attention to detail and is a team player.  
  • Good communication skills are essential.  Excellent organisational skills are required as is the ability to work to tight deadlines.   
  • Whilst this position will operate on daytime working hours, a flexible attitude toward working times is essential.
