Victoria Beckham

fashion designer

As we move towards a colder climate, dust off our boots and shoes from the previous seasons, and pack away our summer dresses and sandals, we can't help but get excited about all the wool, texture, coats and  knitwear, too. Perhaps the most exciting collection from last year's London Fashion Week was the formidable designs of Victoria Beckham.

Mixed messages are beautifully delivered in the form of tailored trousers and coats in checked wool for a handsome statement. Accessories further emphasise the mannish stance, from footwear to bags; buckled brogues & boots are uniform, and the shoulder bag is clutched, rather than carried. Bralet-inspired tops sliced at the midriff break up the masculine overtone with an undercurrent of femininity. Beckham’s offering of ‘modern heritage’, where contemporary designs encroach upon a classic, established aesthetic, successfully manages to convey a timeless appeal; evoking her own English heritage as a designer.

Straight Lines

stripes for winter

Stripes transition into fall with the aid of a dark palette in classic navy and khaki tones, highlighted by ochre and ivory. Binary opposition is further employed when checks contrast stripes. This demonstrates the pull of print & pattern, as well as texture. The pencil skirt, both voluminous and sculpted, is her weapon of choice. Victoria Beckham’s collection, clearly loaded with feminine references, is complemented by her attention to the revised female silhouette; a neo-feminist stance, if you like.

Sweet Lines

Shaping the female form with sweetheart, strapless necklines to elegantly expose the décolletage, frame the bust and corset the waist. Formalwear and everyday elegance meet to make their own mood, which speaks the language of the daytime sophisticate. Sartorial sharpness is in the Victoria Beckham DNA. From her very first collection of dresses, Beckham’s focus is on the well-thought-out wardrobe. Clearly driven by the customer and their need for key pieces, rather than random buys, her designs are much more wearable, contributing to her appeal.
