The most colourful sale of the season is now in full swing!

It is no small wonder that cashmere is one of the most precious and prized commodities in the world. It comes from the downy underfleece of the cashmere goat which makes its home in the highest and most inhospitable plateaux of Mongolia and Xinjiang. Each year one goat produces a meagre 4.5 oz of under fleece, which is painstakingly combed out every spring by nomadic herdsmen. It takes the hair of one goat to make a scarf, two or three for a jumper depending on the weight; 60% of each fleece is discarded. However, it is what happens next that makes the difference between run-of-the-mill and quality cashmere.
Every season the best fibres are carefully selected from the finest producers, brought to Scotland where the coarse ‘guard hairs’ are removed and the transformation from raw fibre to finished article begins. By making sure that only the finest and longest fibres make it through to the next stage, we can be sure the end product will be as soft and downy as can be. Only those that are a minimum of 34mm in length and a maximum thickness of 16.5micron are chosen. Fibre falling short of these specifications will be weaker and will result in quick pilling with wear and a jumper that loses its shape after only a season. Because the fibres we start with are so special, the finished product will cost more.
To say something is 100% cashmere is only the beginning of the story. What sets Brora cashmere apart is the workmanship which goes into it. It goes through 30 different exacting processes, each of them watched over by the latest generation of Scottish craftsmen. At every stage the cashmere - whether it’s a scarf, blanket or jumper - is checked for the tiniest imperfections. Brora colours are specially made and have given vibrancy to the collections over the years that you will not find elsewhere. Five or six different colours are blended together to produce one of Brora's unique colours & every season there is a new selection of up to 30 colours to choose from.
One thing you’ll notice about Brora knitwear is how neat and flat the seams are. That is because we bring together the main elements of front, back and sleeves stitch by stitch in a single-needle seam for a neat and comfortable low profile finish. Many of the finishing touches such as sewing the point of the V on the neck of the jumper are done by hand. Finally, to remove any remaining impurities and oil, we wash each garment in the same soft highland water that is used to make the world’s finest whiskies. It is the softness of the water from the River Teviot in Hawick that is so crucial to the ‘handle’ of Brora knitwear.
Brora is proud to have offered the finest, most beautiful Scottish cashmere in contemporary designs for the past 15 years.
